A reminder: we are part of this land, not separate from it.

The work of rematriation is powerful.

It’s been exactly a year since my fellow Native artist and chosen family, Faz, lobbied alongside members of the local Dallas Native tribes and community to rename the sister lakes near the Trinity River. The resolution renamed the lakes using the words for “sister” in their respective Native languages – NʉmʉNahmi Lake (Comanche Nahmi Lake), Wichita ita:iʔh (pronounced ih-dahts-ih) Lake, and Lipan Apache Mbátí Lake.

Creating these portraits in the waters of the Sister Lakes reminded me of the importance of connecting to our land. Faz’s joy always inspires me to keep creating meaningful work. Our histories, the histories of women, queer folk, and Indigenous communities, will not be erased. We will continue to look to nature — the very land we’re connected to — as our guide.
